I don’t work on projects…

I have heard this statement from dozens (hundreds?) of people! Many, many people tell me that they “don’t work on projects.” Yet, I am here to tell you that…I bet you do! You just don’t know it.

Just recently I was speaking to a group of administrative professionals about project management skills and why learning these skills can be vital for their future. In the chat box, someone typed “I don’t work on projects.” I spoke for about 15 minutes on project management practices, where they are used and how everyone can benefit from learning these skills. At the end of my guest appearance, that same person typed in the chat box, “Now that I understand what project management involves, I would say about 50% of my job is project related.” Yes, I agree.

I didn’t know this person, but the experience is a common one. I witness this reaction on a regular basis. Throughout my career I have observed individuals, organizations, teams, non-profits all struggle to get something completed – a project, a strategic goal, a program, or plan – yet it’s never completed, it sits on someone’s desk for a while, then it moves to a filing cabinet or possibly a round filing “dispenser.” No one discusses it, no one mentions it. It just disappears. This is so unfortunate. If you consider all the time, attention, excitement and focus that the project may have had, initially. And, if anyone brings up the topic of the “permanently filed project”, there will usually be someone nearby to say “We tried that and it didn’t work…” What a shame to have had so much enthusiasm and passion for a project and to just let it go because of an unexpected challenge, issue or hurdle. What went wrong? What happened? Let me share an idea…

Consider expanding your existing skill set by learning project management practices. Leverage the talent that you have and introduce project techniques, tools and templates that will not only elevate your level of confidence but will help you to gain the visibility you need to tackle those new and rewarding opportunities to work on projects and lead project teams.

Now is the time to act, make a commitment to yourself and your organization and give those struggling projects the boost they need – YOU! Are you ready? If you’re ready, I am here to help guide you on this wonderful learning journey! I can’t wait for you to join me.  #focusonyourfuture #pmforadmins #successthroughpm #betterprojectexperiences
