Why You Should Hire a Strategy Coordinator

I received another call from a company looking for help with their strategy. There is a pattern that I have observed with respect to strategic planning activities - a small to medium size firm decides to update their strategic plan and spends a good deal of time designing their strategy, yet very little time, if any, is dedicated to how to deliver on that new strategy.

 As a matter of fact, in the strategy arena, this scenario is a common discussion topic because of the statistics from the Brightline Initiative. Research conducted by the organization has found that only 1 in 10 organizations can deliver all of their strategic initiatives successfully. Why? Issues with delivery or implementation.

 What implementation issues can impact a strategy?

A)   There is no implementation plan discussed, developed or executed.

B)   The implementation plan is not sustainable so the organization quickly reverts back to their “day jobs”. The strategy suffers which results in the strategic goals never being achieved.

C)   The implementation plan is flawed because it was not developed, collaboratively, with the organization, and in conjunction with the strategy design and therefore, cannot be effectively executed.

 Now is the time to change this situation. Organizations cannot continue to do the same thing year after year and expect different results. Other responsibilities might include the development or assessment of the delivery plan, establishing a monitoring tool to help track the progress of the strategic plan, uncovering any issues or challenges associated with the strategy delivery, addressing any risks identified with respect to the strategic goals and working with the leadership team to establish best practices for future strategy activities.
